    Could it be possible?

Passed several C5 beauties yesterday in my '58 and I waved....none returned.
Do you think it's possible that they (the drivers) don't even know what a C1 looks like?

      Re: Could it be possible?

most C-5 owners are first time corvette owners(except me ) and they most likely never heard of the "WAVE". i try to get them into our club "Corvette Club of Western Pa" and there they can learn all about the good old corvette "WAVE". any time i talk to a C-5 owner i try to indoctrinate them into the corvette "LIFESTYLE"

I have found the same thing when I am out in my 57 . Only about 1 in 10 return the wave. Bob

What a shame, and the joke about the whole deal is those other nine guys when the GMAC lease is up will just go and lease a BMW or LEXUS, or whatever. No Corvette loyalty or GM loyalty what so ever. It stinks.>George

Terry - Until you have resusciated a C1,2 or 3 from the brink of extinction, you cannot possibly understand the passion these cars inspire in us. It takes a certain type of person who will purchase these cars in boxes, strain our marriages and wallets, then obsess over details like semi flat vs. semi gloss paint finishes. The character and thrill of driving are unmatched. The wave originated from enthusiasts who understood our common connection. The average
C5 owner has no such history. The C5 is the finest performance automobile available in its' price range, but would garner no attention from me as it sits next to your C1 at the local show.

                  The corrollary

Today my Dad took me for a ride in his new 2002 (only 240 miles on it so far). We saw 3 Corvettes in the 10 miles, all C3's, and only 1 waved. Most never even saw us. I don't think it's just a C5 thing.

All the little kids we passed who were walking home from school sure noticed us, though!

                      Re: The corrollary

I still seem to get waves in the 66 or the 70 but it is less than it used to be. I sometimes miss waving as well because these cars require attention to drive, unlike the new ones. Driving a motorcycle is worse though. ALL bikers used to wave. Now the new Harley guys only wave if you are on a Harley. They just ignore me on the Triumph and are even worse if you drive a Japaneese bike. Most of the old bikers, (the "grease under your nails"), guys, Still wave though. The new Harley guys just don't realize that if there is a bike broken down on the road the chances are real good it will be a Harley. Then they will wish they had waved.

Sorry to digress but the wave thing seems to be a universal sign of our busy and hectic times.

                        The Wave came from Camaraderie...

...the camaraderie of owning and driving a Corvette. Begininng more than forty years ago that used to mean a lot to Corvette owners. And it's lasted all this time. The Wave didn't come in boxes. It didn't come with a numbers matching original cylinder case. It didn't come with a membership to exclusive Corvette clubs. The Wave came from anyone that understood what it meant to own and drive a Corvette on the street, on the strip, or at the track. It's ironic, even a little hypocritical, but it's the same Camaraderie that gets buried by some "enthusiasts" and resurfaces to live on elsewhere.

Do the new C-5 owners understand the Camaraderie?...not really, and those first owners of the C5 generation will fade away. It'll take a generation of "second owner C-5" to pick up on the feeling and the understanding. Those will be the C5 owners that are really interested in the Corvette. Duke Williams said it best once at another Forum, "Some of you (C5 owners) need to climb off your high horse and study the history of the car you're driving." Some will and some could care less. But as long as there are Corvettes, time and the Wave will prevail. TBarr #24014

Ther Wave Actually Started As An MG Thing

Then it spread to drivers of ANY sports cars. The Corvette wave is a special case thing restricted to Corvette owners.

I take exception to the statement that the C5 is the world's finest sports car. Drive a Viper for comparison!

                          Dale.

I think you're all being a little hard on C-5 owners. I drive a 66 coupe and a 97 coupe, and I love them both, for very different reasons. I will say that working on the restoration of my 66 has given me a huge appreciation for what GM engineering has done with the C-5. I believe the C-5 is the best for the money. A Viper may be a great car, and will probably blow the doors off a stock C-5, but a C-5 doesn't cost $80,000. Even if you can't afford a new C-5, used ones get into the affordable range within a few years. As for the wave, yeah, there are a lot of C-5 owners who don't get it, but when I'm driving my C-5 and see C-1 through C-4, I experiance the same thing. Fact is if you love Vette's, regardless of the era it's a thrill to drive any one of 'em, and a thrill to acknowledge others as well.

                              Re: Could it be possible?

I think there are a variety of reasons why you may not have a "salute" returned and yes, some of them do have to do with a lack of respect for the car's heritage. Personally, I don't think the wave has to be taught to anyone. You either get it the first time someone in a Corvette waves at you or you don't and never will.

There are many comraderie groups that vehicles fall into and the bond is implied. If you see another Corvette on the road, you wave. The meaning is clear..."Hey, we're kin, both driving cars with a common bloodline." I would also wave to a Viper (or other American Iron sports car, if there were others) with the implied meaning of a couple of guys passing in cars that are not quite so ordinary. I ride a motorcycle and I do put my hand out even to the Harley riders (many of them do return the "salute") with the understanding, again, that we have something in common. I also have a bigblock '67 Fairlane. As I was leaving my subdivision onto the main road, a guy in a primer '68 Camaro went by and shot me a wave. I'm sorry I missed returning it but his "salute" to me was that here were a couple of guys in a somewhat upscale neighborhood driving American muscle cars (I know how he feels...an iconoclast).

I was driving down the road this weekend and head-on passed a very nice red '92 coupe. I was waving away. Never got a thing back. I figured he was fixed on the road, tuning his radio, didn't know they made Corvettes prior to the C4, or adjusting the kinks out of his gold neck chain. The only satisfaction I got out of the deal is that I was accelerating when I went by and was sure he got an ear full of rpm from the exhaust tips. He must have been wondering "What the hell was that!"

So, in summary, you either get it or you don't. The ones that don't are beyond much hope or our help.
