    Re: 2X4 carbs too hot???

I do not have to remove the manifold? Above or below the gasket? Thanks, Don

      Thx Duke,
I think I am going to remove heat riser first, then if that does not cure it, block the passages. This should also help with my overheating at idle. I was told that the 270 motor did not have a heat riser?

Re: I would check the choke heat tube.

I put a new choke heat tube on. Is there something else inside the exhaust manifold that should be present? What exactly rusts thru?

just loosen all the bolts a couple of turns after you drain the rad down, slide the shim in either above or below the gasket on both sides. i always bend a 1/8" 90 degree lip on the top of the shim so it can not slip past the edge of the manifold. a piece 1 3/4" wide X 2" long plus the 1/8" lip will do the trick.

there is a steel tube in the exhaust manifold that passes thru to the bottom side that the tube to the choke housing fits inside of and if that tube is burned then you get carbon and water into the choke thermostat housing causing it to jam up. just take off the choke cover and look for water /carbon in the choke housing.

                      Duke,
                      Thx,
I was told that the 270 mtr was not supposed to have a heat riser? In either case I am removing it. Was it supposed to?

                          CAUTION!

Clem's RIGHT ON here (check choke for exhaust deposits)..... A worst case scenario, but CAN/DOES happen, is the fresh air cross over tube inside the exhaust mani is ruptured and red hot exhaust gas 'tickles' the integrity of the choke-carb seal. IF exhaust gas should happen to win the integrity test, gas stored in the carb can go up in flames! An ugly situation in a fiberglass bodied vehicle....

I'm not a Solid Axle expert, but to the best of my knowledge all carbureted engines of that era had a heat riser.

It's purpose was to aid fuel evaporization during warmup by creating a "hot spot" below the carburetor to aid fuel distribution. FI engines did not have/need one because fuel was injected into each port.
