My question is about installing rear wheel bearing on a 72. Do the rear wheel bearings need to be packed before using the setup tool or does it matter.

Re: Rear wheel bearing setup
Grease should not affect the end play, but it's pretty messy, so do the fit with just a thin film of grease on the races.
Once they're installed with grease for the final check, rotate the spindle several times while pushing it in and out. This should force excess grease from the bearings and allow you to measure the true end play.

You may want to take another look at the "sealed" 607 bearings (most likely from BCA) in your C-1; the bearings now being supplied as replacements were designed for use in lathes and other machine tools, and just happen to "fit" C1 Corvettes. In order for them to last, the "seal" on the inboard side of the bearing needs to be removed so it can get lube from the diff, or they will eventually fail; the seal removed from the inboard side must then be re-installed on the outboard side (or use new seals) to keep lube off the brakes. Those bearings NEED lube.- Top

They had seals on both sides
John,
I did not keep the box they cam in. I will look into it and let you know. The bearings I installed were sealed on both sides. I have about 15 hours on them, mostly highway at 70 MPH or better and have seen no indication of problems. I was under the rear replacing the rubber for the sway bar yesterday and inspected everything associated with the rear. I replaced the bearings because I installed a posi and have been keeping a close eye the rear and assocoated parts. One of the old bearings was installed backwords, no telling how many hours were on those bearings.- Top

John, Called Federal Mogul tech line 800-325-8885
John,
I called Federal Mogul tech line and they verified that these are "sealed" bearings that do not need external lubrication. The darn things were $100 each. I figured they were so darn expensive because they were sealed. These also had 2 O-rings on the OD. They looked like nice parts.
Please, if you can, give me more info on this issue. My email is awilco@hotmail.com
Thanks
