    77 GEARS

    MY 77 L-48 RUNS ABOUT 2400 RPMS AT 60 MPH. COULD ANYONE TELL ME WHAT KIND OF REAREND I HAVE IN MY SHARK BASED ON THIS INFO? AND IF SO, DO YOU THINK IT IS STOCK.

    THANKS,

    CHRIS

    P.S- JOE L. DID YOU RECIEVE MY BOGUS E-MAIL ABOUT FENDER FLARES :0)

    Re: 77 GEARS

    Based on Dukes earlier post to my 77's transmission, based on factory wheel size, ~760 revolutions/mile, the ratio would be:

    ratio = rpm@60mph / 760rev/mile = ~3.15

        I don't know if there was a 3.15 offered, but I believe that 3.08 was the optional 'highway' ratio. probably close enough to assume that's what you've got if it's stock.

            I just opened up my owners manual and voila! 3.08 rear end is probably what you have. If you don't trust your tach or speedo you can do the following:

            Raise the rear wheels, release the parking brake. Spin the rear wheels by hand counting how many times the drive axle rotates to complete 1 rotation of the wheel. The number of drive axle rotations is your rear differential ratio!

            I just did mine today -3.70:1

                It's tough to read a speedo or tach to one or two percent accuracy and the instruments themselves are probaby no better than within two percent of true at best.

                It's a 3.08, and Chris, in the future would you please post in normal lower case type.
