A friend recently acquired an unrestored 66 convertible. This cars is a complete 2-owner car with the original spare and owners lapel pin. In looking at the numbers there are some that don't add up between the trim tag and the protecto-plate.
The protecto-plate has the original owners name and appears to be genuine. The interior code is Std. which is black vinyl but the seats are black leather. This is fairly easily explained. The paint code on the protecto-plate is 988 which is Milano Maroon but the trim tag is 974 which is rally red. Looking at some out of the way places, it appears the car was originaly milano maroon. I suppose someone could have changed the trim tag. I would believe the protecto-plate as gospel except that the engine pad is stamped F 0521HE and the protecto-plate is F 0524HEH. I suspect this is an error that the factory made when they initially stamped the upper portion of the protecto-plate. Also, the owners name and address are not stamped into the protecto-plate but are applied with clear dymo tape embossed with the owners data. I believe this to be original because there are tiny bowties visible in the tape.
These errors would certainly leave the judges scratching their heads. Any insight as to the best way to resolve these differences would be helpful. Thanks.
