    62 coolant leak

I have a 62 fuelie leaking from behind one of the bolts. It is the upper right hand bolt (closest to the overflow tank). This is the bolt that has the spacer in it. It looks like the coolant is coming from behind the bolt head like water is coming up the threads. Any ideas? I guess the obvious one is a gasket but I was hoping I could get around that. Also it leaks a lot, if I go for a short drive it will leak about 2 litres or so. I dont know metric stuff but at least a pepsi bottle full. What should this bolt be torqued to?

    Thanks

    Todd.

    Todd -

Which bolt are you referring to - can you be more specific about where it is and what it's attaching?

I think you're talking about an intake manifold bolt. Some of tese bolts protrude into water passages. Put a little non-hardening sealer (like permatex #2) on the bolt and retighten, Don't get too rough with the wrench. It doesn't need to be gorilla tight, and that fuelie manifold is pretty valuable.

I will look tonight but it as bolt going throught the water pump. It is the driver side upper water pump bolt but I will put a better description on later. Thanks for your efforts.

Misunderstood your post. Thought you were refering to the front bolt on the intake. However, the exact same principle applies assuming your water pump gaskets are not leaking. These bolts extend into a wetted area as well.

                    Better description

It is the bolt/stud combo that holds the bracket for the adjusting pulley assembly. In Nolands resto guide pg 385 upper right hand side there is a blow up of it. More specific parts 11, 8, 6,5 have the leak. It must be the gasket. I saw the leak last night coming fom behind the stud and the nut. I was hoping to avoid taking the pump off to do gaskets but I think I am stuck.

                    Thanks

                    Todd.

Todd--A couple of thoughts. First, the idler pulley set-up, in spite of what the AIM says, was not installed on 62 Corvettes. I have been studying them since October of 1974, have studied original-owner cars as late as 14,383, and am absolutely convinced that they were never installed on 62's. Just because a lot of Corvette parts people have them in their catalog doesn't mean that they are correct.
Secondly-- my experience (and I hope it's not yours) is that the front motor mount plate can easily, because of rust over the years, develop a small split in the metal in the area you are talking about, and no gasket or gasket sealer or bolt sealer will help. Make sure you eyeball that area before slap it all back together. Good luck!

The resto guide shows this for Fuelies and mine is a fuelie, I forgot to mention that. Did they come on fuelies?
