    Follow-up questions?

Jimmy - did your engine just have one shim gasket per side?

Are there any marks on the gasket to identify it, and can you measure it to determine the compressed thickness? Finally does it appear to be plain carbon steel or stainless steel?

    Thanks!

    Duke

P.S. A thicker composition gasket to both cut the CR and guarantee a good seal is probably the way to go.

        Re: Follow-up questions?

use a magnet to check for steel vs stainless steel as stainless is non magnetic. stainless head gaskets are still available from the after market but not GM. GM never used stainless from the factory to my knowledge. the best sealer for stainless steel shim gaskets is hi temp aluminum paint.clean the surfaces with lacquer thinner and then paint both sides of the gasket, the head surface and the block surface and put together while still wet. i have use this on SB race engines with 13:1 comp ratio with no failures.

The shop has the gaskets and there was only one per side. the one side that was leaking looked like it had just deteriated around the coolant hole. the other side had some warpage around the cylender. I am going to go back with a fel pro gasket kit.
