    Re: Why Corvettes

In the fall of 1970, fresh out of active duty in the Army, I just had to have one of those new T-top Corvettes. I couldn't afford a new '71 or even a used '70 so I found a silver '69 I could afford. It was the first car I ever purchased. My insurance agent told me not to even call him if it had anything more than a base engine small block because he would not write an insurance policy for it (I lived in New York City at the time). I also needed an automatic because I would be commuting on the Long Island Expressway and thought that manual shifting in that traffic everyday would get very old very quickly. I took the car to my dad's mechanic for a look and was told not to buy this "piece of junk" because it would not last more than a few years and then be worth nothing. I bought it anyway. I had to put it in the garage until I turned 25 in February so I could afford the insurance. I drove it everyday for 18 years in every kind of weather hauling lumber out of the T-top, getting buried in snow, etc. The mechanic who advised against the purchase is long gone but I still own the Corvette! Iplan on having it judged at the Michigan regional this spring. Got a Chapter Top Flight in 2004.

      Re: Why Corvettes

Unlike most Corvette enthusiasts I didn't fall in love with one as a kid.

No one in my immediate family loved classic cars, so I was never introduced to them in my youth. Then in high school in the early 80s a friend of mine had a restored 69 Mustang that was super cool, and it was the first time I'd really even thought about older cars.

When I was a senior in high school in 1985 another friend got a new C4, although it never really caught my attention. I'm the kind of person where if I'm not focused on something, it may as well not exist, and if I am, I want to know everything there is to know about it. And up to the 90s I knew virtually nothing about Corvettes, and I only dreamed of a classic Mustang.

Then when I was about 25 in the early 90s while in Baton Rouge I truly SAW a C4 for the first time. It was shaped like a dagger, so elegant and sophisticated. I was hooked, and I bought my first Vette new, a 96 LT4 roadster, that I still have in pristine condition.

Since I was now a Vette owner I wanted to know all I could about them. This opened a whole new world to me containing all these incredibly cool cars I had only been vaguely aware of.

Although I really love all of the body styles, the chrome-bumper Sharks hit me like a ton of bricks, and I just had to have one eventually. So in 2005 I bought a SB 70 roadster that will be going for a Duntov in St. Charles this Summer. I joined NCRS in 2006.

I still think the C4 body style has a certain coolness to it that few cars can match, and I think the Sharks are some of THE coolest, most unique cars ever made.

I can never get enough of Corvettes, and I really appreciate the perfectionist-like standards of NCRS.
