    Re: Why Corvettes

    Roy,

Just curious if you could expand on the license plate. With that letter sequence - YRR 457 - my expectation would be that plate was first issued in 1961 or 1962.

    Thanks
    Don

                Re: Why Corvettes

the first car i ever owned was a corvette. i always loved corvettes as a kid. i had a neighbor with a 63 corvette and a few other muscle cars. we became friends and i would help him work on his cars every saturday for years. i always said one day i would have a corvette. when i was 16 years old in 10th grade my parents told me to go out and find something practicle and they would buy it for me. they would pay for the car and insurance and the rest was on me. my year older sister got a new 1978 mavrick but that kind of car was not for me. i wanted a corvette. i talked to my neighbor with the cars and he said he would help me find something. we found a corvette a guy in the neighborhood had that he wanted to sell. it was a 1972 lt1 convertible, red/ black (with air), yes with air, that had some front end damage. the car needed some help. the car was rough. i bought the car for $2400.00. i could not even drive it because it needed help. my neighbor that i worked with every saturday for several years said we would fix it up together. we got the car running good but it was still in need of some body repair. he introduced me to a friend of his that owned a body shop that specialized in corvette repair and restoration, john peacock at peacock body works in columbus ga. we worked out a deal and he would fix the car and paint it. i had to work in the body shop for the summer stripping the paint off of cars and working around the shop. i learned alot and got my car fixed. my 11th grade year i had the coolest car at the school. i had the car for the next 7 years as my only car, daily driver until i had my first serious crash and destroyed the car. i got the insurance money and got another one. the rest is history. i have had a corvette ever since. my buddy john and i are still good friends and he still does all my body work. i have two corvettes there now. we are building a red/ black 72 lt1 convertible just like the car i had in high school. this car will be my weekend driver. we are also buildind a red/ black 70 lt1 convertible that will be a judged show car. it probably wont see much road time. corvettes are still my hobby. they always have been and probably always will be.

                    I miss those days

My first son when I just got it back from Bruno's shop in Hollywood, it was his first time replacing a Corvette front section , used my Corvette to learn on// labor and material was free. Like I said I worked at a Chevy dealer in Burbank Ca. And bought all NOS parts at 10% over dealer cost. Steering wheel to grill shell= $35.00. Doing all the work myself I used a fork lift to install the body in later years .
I remember when I first took it to a NCRS meet , back then many people dint think a 57 came with FI and PG, but later realized they made about 105 cant remember the numbers now! But what blow people away was when I ran the power top and windows , again back then few knew or saw one working.
Good old days when we were all learning about Corvettes.

                            Re: Why Corvettes

The quick version of my story is that in grade school (mid 70's) I saw a friend's older borther working on a dual carb red 58-61 that had fire breathing out the top of the engine (must have been a timing thing). That blew me away enough, but to learn that the car and some of its windows were plastic??? All that plus that classic look of a red straight axle with white coves got this 12 year old hooked. Wasn't untill after Corvairs and the approach of my 40th b-day that I got the 61 in 2000, then the 70 in 2006. I want the 63SWC before 2010. And like you Roy, I drive them, I average about 5000 corvette miles a year in New England...

                                Re: Why Corvettes

In the fall of 1970, fresh out of active duty in the Army, I just had to have one of those new T-top Corvettes. I couldn't afford a new '71 or even a used '70 so I found a silver '69 I could afford. It was the first car I ever purchased. My insurance agent told me not to even call him if it had anything more than a base engine small block because he would not write an insurance policy for it (I lived in New York City at the time). I also needed an automatic because I would be commuting on the Long Island Expressway and thought that manual shifting in that traffic everyday would get very old very quickly. I took the car to my dad's mechanic for a look and was told not to buy this "piece of junk" because it would not last more than a few years and then be worth nothing. I bought it anyway. I had to put it in the garage until I turned 25 in February so I could afford the insurance. I drove it everyday for 18 years in every kind of weather hauling lumber out of the T-top, getting buried in snow, etc. The mechanic who advised against the purchase is long gone but I still own the Corvette! Iplan on having it judged at the Michigan regional this spring. Got a Chapter Top Flight in 2004.
