My judging manual calls for a gray phosphate finish on the latch brackets. Does anyone know if this is available in a spray can or maybe a home plating syatem? I want it to look correct. I appreciate any help. Thanks, Mark

Re: 69 hood latch bracket color
Lighter gray is zinc phosphate, and darker (to black) gray is manganese phosphate. The chemicals are readily available on the web, especially if you look under "Parkerizing" which is the name generally used when the process is applied to firearms.
I've had a manganese phosphate kit for the last few years and find it easy to use. I've rarely had problems with it and usually get excellent quality.

Like this:
Not the kit I have, but you get the idea.
It is not difficult to find.

Re: 69 hood latch bracket color
Mark, It's VERY easy to do this type of plating yourself and there isn't a spray bomb out there that is even close in my books! I was going to just order some or the parkerizing solution from the States but "oh no!!...can't ship that up to Canada!!!" was the standard story but then I got lucky and bought some from Grant because he is up here too. His solution worked great so you can't go wrong with either sourse.- Top

Re: 69 hood latch bracket color
Mark,
Here's Grant Wong's gray phosphate being used on a 67 alternator pulley.
If you want black phosphate also get Grant's OEM black and mix the two or predip
in the black before you cook it in the gray.
Very easy to do, all you need is an old crock pot.
Email Grant from his NCRS profile.

Patrick:
Which of the kits would you recommend for hood latches, etc.-Manganese Black, Zinc Grey, or Charcoal Gray? I think I would like to try this stuff but want to get as close as possible what's correct for my '69. Thanks.

Re: 69 hood latch bracket color
Ha ha ha.
Actually, never used it on anything for that car. Really.
I've been working on a 66 for some friends, and did a LOT of bolts for that car. Also did several for a 70 recently.

Re: 69 hood latch bracket color
Jeff,
Did you look at the pictures posted last week by Mark Donnally? It showed both colors. My impression is that the latches on the hood are light to medium gray, and the ones on the car body are dark. I noted this same variation in a 70 I'm working on.
Maybe we can swap plating time.
