    Re: 461 X Head Survey

    Hi! Duke

The 61-62 NCRS JG states the end of January or beginning of February, 1962. This is one of the reasons for the survey, I would like to collect as many pictures of symbols and date codes as possible.

        Ray,
My 461 heads are L70 - The same as the heads in your photographs. They have a rounded hump which is different than the flat heads in your survey. I can't see the left front symbol due to the motor mount but the other 3 locations seem to be of the rounded variety.

                Mike,
I don't see the X with them being on the car. I always wondered about that but apparently the X is hidden once they are installed. I'll pull the valve covers and take a few photos. Seems the rounded tops on the humps is not normal on the early 461's. The judging Guide mentions that there are some exceptions so my set may be one of those.

dave: you'll have to remove the heads and look on the block mating surface of the head to determine if your heads are 461or 461x. no "x" identification under the valve covers. mike

                        Re: 461 X Head Survey

I always thought you could identify between 461X and 461 at the cast around the lower valve cover bolt hole. 461X is flat across this area and 461 is built up around the bolt hole. You can feel it with your fingers and spot it right away after you see the two heads together, it's a quick check without taking the head off the car. I could be wrong on this but that's the way my 461X heads look.
