Yes I now see what you mean. I have a 1110891 bowl type on my '59 270hp dual four wcfb which has the pipe you speak of. The "stovepipe" I saw was on page 4 of the reference article, upper left photo of the 1110985. It's a short horizontal pipe with the GITS cap at a right angle facing up. Maybe that was a homebrew changed dist in the photo. I never saw that one before.
Makes sense about the nylon button as a thrust bearing for the tach drive gears. Seems odd that wasn't designed in from the beginning. Maybe they should have talked to the electric fan motor guys to see how they handled it.
So the conclusion is the first distributor I posted about appears to be a '63 or '64 1111024 that had the wrong band on it. Thanks to all who helped solved my mystery and for info on the vacuum advances as well.
