    67 L79 Water Pump Belt

I recently bought a 67 L79. the water pump belt looked very loose; it was probably a Napa belt. I ordered a 'correct' one from C Central, wrapped belt I assume made by Quanta. That belt is also loose allowing for about 1/2" deflection with little pressure, and of course there is no adjustment on the WP belt. My crank and WP pulleys are original as is the water pump so I cannot think of anything that is off in the hardware. I have no belt squeal and a restorer/friend says it probably isn't a problem as I have 50% wrap on both pulleys in addition to the alternator pulley belt. I could just go to Napa and get a belt 1/2" shorter but I plan to have the car judged and would like to get the correct length belt- any thoughts or info would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim Baker

    Jim,

Are you talking about the captive belt that goes around just the water pump and crank pulleys? Do you know what Quanta part number yoy got? And do you know the outer circumference of the belt? I have a Quanta belt for my '66 L79 at home that I can measure when get home tonight.

Yes, I am talking about the captive belt that goes around the water pump and crank pulleys. No, I didn't think to measure the belt. thanks for response.

        Jim,

Measure your belt with a cloth tape measure around the outside and I'll do the to mine. Since my Quanta belt is new and never installed, if we get the same measurement it suggests that I will have the same problem when it comes time for me to install the belt. But it my belt is shorter, that might be useful information.

          Jim------

Reproduction belts usually have the GM part number embossed on them (or, printed in the case of 73+ belts). So, what is the number on yours?

Quanta sells a long and short version of the belt. Try the short one.

Jim, how did your belt story turn out?

                    Jim,

In the end, did it turn out that you had the "long" version of the Quanta's L79 belt?

Gary, I am not sure yet. I don't have time to work on the car now. I assumed I had the long belt and have ordered the short one from Quanta. We're going to be gone for a couple of weeks so late this month I will try to put it on. Will try to remember to send you a follow-up when that is done. Send me a short email (jmbvette@aol.com) if you don't mind so I have your email address, that will also help jog my memory; thanks,Jim Baker
