    69 column

I need to change out the key cylinder on a '69 column. Not familiar with the c3's that much. I can't get it out, what is the trick? I have removed the cancelling cam and even the next section of the column, pulled it all apart (left in the wiring), but I can't tell where the release is? Any help?

    Thanks

    Re: 69 column

I did this job on my 1970 and remember it as being unpleasant. I followed the factory service manual, and can't recall anything at the moment tricky about it except aligning the gears to get the ignition switch and the lock in sync on the reinstall. I'll take a look at the spare lock cylinder later today and maybe something will come back to me.

      Jeremy

Their is a slot that you need to push down the release with a small screwdriver near the center shaft. Their are many steps in the manual to keep from breaking parts like the buzzer switch.

Lyle's post jogged the memory cells.
The slot that one needs to put the small screwdriver in is sometimes covered with casting flash -- according to the Factory Service Manual (FSM). Mine wasn't and that's why I didn't remember that detail.
He is right that there are many steps to the process and the FSM has them all. The little reed switch for the key buzzer is very fragile, and if yours is a tilt column, difficult to obtain.

          Jeremy -

The procedure is covered in detail, with photos, on page 9-10 and 9-11 in the 1969 Chassis Service Manual (Steering section).

Nice job you picked to do

This is one of the times you want the parts in hand.
I am not shure how far a long you are but take your time.
It may take 2 people and remember how the parts came off .Set them some place off to the side the way they came off.If they brake the clip is easy to get but the buzzer is VERY VERY hard to find. But I gave you the Part # "go fish"

Now the key lock there at least 3 different locks.Get the right one or you will have 2 extra like me.
Look at the back of the lock and the side they have to be the same small changes were made.I do not think the locks can be rekeyed. So take the lock to the oldest locksmith and ask him.He will enjoy the challenge.

I will keep an I on your post if you need me.

I don't have the manual, so can anyone walk me thru it?

              Thanks for the responses.

Damn Patrick, I was looking for that site to link to and couldn't find it.

As good as that site is, I would still want the manual in hand to remove the lock cylinder. Next to rear wheel bearings that job is right up there on the difficulty scale.

Guys, thanks for the honest answers. I understand about the manuals. I have a Corvette restoration business, have done somewhere between 20-30 frame offs but only 58-67. I am only working on this car as a favor, believe me I don't like this one. Things are so much easier on the C1 and C2 cars. About five years ago I worked on a 72's vacuum system and said to myself I would never work on a c3 again. I should have listened. I don't know why they make it so difficult. Do I need the AIM or Service manual?

Regretful C3 servicer (and never again)

                              No problem, Terry.

I tried this job myself...and ended up shipping out the column.
No way I'd do this job.
