    C3 points again

    Points again
I set the point the first time using the tune method with me turning the points till it misses them backing off
That should put them at 30 degrees right or close? I lost my dwell meter, so I borrowed one from a friend and put it on today and it was showing a bout 10degrees but when I turn the points the scale does not move. I hooked it positive lead to the coil and then black on the bracket on the engine that holds the radio shield. Do I have it on the car right? How good is setting the points the way you just listen to the engine ? Thanks

Also with each method should the vacuum advance be undone?

My dwell meter has 4 leads. Two leads are for power and on the others one hooks to the neg side of the coil and one to ground. You do not have to disconnect the vacuum line to set the dwell.

Setting the points 'by sound' is about as accurate as target shooting wearing a blindfold. At least get them close by using a feeler gauge to start with.

Once the dwell is properly set, make sure you check the initial or total timing- with a timing light.

You can't set points by "ear". As the dwell/gap changes the timing changes, which will affect engine speed.

If you don't have an accurate dwell meter set them at the CSM recommeded gap, then set the initial timing to spec.

It sounds like your dwell meter connections are correct. Be sure you are on the correct scale and verify dwell meter function on another engine. If it's okay then the distributor may have a mechanical problem.

If you don't have a functional dwell meter, set them at .019" for new points or .016" for used points; that will get you pretty close until you can put a dwell meter on them.
