    1964 Coupe carpet and underlay

I have a 1964 FI Coupe Vin 13708 which has some of its original carpet and all of its original 'padding' underlayment. This consists of a thick black press formed cardboard material with a jute type material under it. The few original pieces of carpet left do not have the 'grey foam' backing but just a thin grey smooth material which the carpet is attached. This is my 3rd 64 Coupe and all have had this same configuration. One was a nice one owner car, never 'restored' which was great to learn from. The JM says no 'jute' backing was used in 63/64. My 1963 Coupe did not have this configuration which still had its original carpet etc. The 64 underlayment is molded in the front areas and the rear including the wheel wells. I've looked at many archive threads and believe 64 convertibles had the 'grey foam' backing but the Coupes I believe are the configuration I've run into. Not sure about very early 64 Coupes. Can any 64 Coupe owners confirm this carpet and underlay so we can hopefully include this in the JM.
    Thanks, Dan

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

HI Dan, Talk to Bill Sangrey about this. He does a lot of seminars on carpeting seats, etc.
My buddy Dave who you have talked to told CC the same thing. Dave has some of the original interior from his 64 which he bought new and then later bought it back. Call him on this. I assume you still have his number. If not email me. I guess you need all the extra jute for all the 1000's of miles you put on with your 64. Take care, John

I am in the process of doing a frame off on my early build 64 a/c coupe. I recently removed the carpet for replacement. Underneath the carpet was the stiff black coating layered (glued) on top of the original jute. The jute was molded to the rear wheel wells. It was too far gone to tell if it was molded to the footwells. The jute was glued to the fiberglass floor with a mustard colored glue. Although, I am not reusing the original jute I kept the best pieces for reference and placement around the seat tracks. I've owned the car for over 30 years and am fairly confident this underlayment is original to the car.

Hope I can help. I have a very original 64 coupe (early Sept build) Top Flight and Bloomington Survivor. The carpet is original and never been out of the car. I will try to post thre photos that I just went out and took. All are of the passenger side. The first is the carpet lifted up from the floor just in front of the seat. The other two are the passenger side as well but up under the dash. Please note the top of the carpet is a finished seam. I had a big debate with the judges at the Regional where they said original carpets were not finished at the top, i.e. ragged cut. Fortunately there was another original owner 64 convertible that also had the top edge finished. Let me know of I can do more. David
