I need an education on electric chokes

Having never dealt with one other than to adjust it, I'll be putting an electric choke carb on my engine and need to learn how to wire it up.

Any overly simplistic explanations out there?

    Apprciate any help,

    Chuck

wire it to a full 12 volts that is controlled

off and on by the ignition key

      Re: Ok.......

So the negative side go's to a good ground and the positive to a switched twelve volt power sourse...........cool!

I was hoping that there wasn't some freakin sensor or probe involved.

      Thanks Clem I appreciate it,

      Chuck

        Chuck -

Don't power it from the coil (+) terminal like some folks do - the choke needs a full 12 volts, and the coil (+) terminal is fed through a resistance wire (serves the same function as the separate ballast resistor on pre-'68 cars).

Some do use an external heat sensor. However, even if they do, the wiring is quite simple.

Chuck look on the fuse block and you will see where you can connect a wire to the space provided labeled "ign" and run the wire through the firewall to the electric choke. This will give you 12 volts when the key is in the "on" position.

if the car has a alternator one of the plug in

wires is 12 volts controlled by the ignition switch

                    Re: Excellent information

You want 12 volts controlled by the ignition switch that's close by. On a C1 and at least some C2s, the closest is the ignition switch side of the ballast resistor. The ignition switch side is the full 12 volts. The side that goes to the distributor is less than 12. Windshield wiper is also close by.

This circuit is not fused. That made me nervous. When I did mine, I spliced an in-line fuse in. 10 amps, I believe.

                      Re: Excellent information

I'm leaning towards the alternator connction as it will reduce the length of wire required to reach both the fan unit and thermal switch.
