    1965 Muncie Trans

I am trying to determine the casting numbers for the main case, side cover, and tailshaft housing for a May 1965 car. These items are not judged, and do not appear in the NCRS manual. Also, does the speedo cable exit the left or right side of the tailhousing. Thanks in advance.

    Main Case Casting # 3851325

    Side Cover Casting # 3831707

Tail Shaft Housing Casting # 3846429 till around Feb '65 then 3857584 The first one has the speedo on the drivers side and the second has it on the passenger side and the later main cases may have the larger countershaft? Can't remember.

As an aside, I own two cars in the 6500 serial number series with original trans and pass side tailshaft configurations. This would lead me to beileve the change was early Jan for the pass side configuration.

Bill --- I'll go you one better; my # 01487 (Sept 16th assy) trans has the "584" tailshaft with speedo cable attached to the passenger side. Examining the AIM, I see no evidence (rev #, etc.) that a '65 M20 trans in a Corvette ever had a driver side speedo output. This Feb '65 changeover business comes from Colvin.

I agree, My perswonal experience has been that almost all '65s used the later configuration. I owned #838 once, but it was so long ago I don't remember what side it was on. ( Pre-NCRS days)
