    1966-1968 distributor lubrication

Last night I cleaned up my mystery 1966, 67, 68 distrubutor so all is ready when the re-build parts arrive.

In order of disassembly, after the breaker plate was removed, I found a felt washer setting on a plastic seal and a mystery material below it.

This material appeared to be fiberous in appearance but easily fell apert when touched.

Was this well area packed with heavy grease and it's just all dried up, or was it a felt type material that has desintergrated from age.

    Thanks, Chuck

It's just the remnants of the grease that lubricates the upper shaft bushing. The oil drained away/evaporated long ago. Grease is an emulsion of oil and solids. What you found is typical. The oil is long gone leaving behind the solids from the grease. Replace it with a NGLI #2 general purpose grease.

The felt seal should be saturated in oil, then allowed to drain. It provide lubrication for the breaker plate which rotates in response to the vacuum advance control.

I was also told by a Gent that it may also have been a blend of saw dust and oil as well.

The material DID have the texture of dried out fine sawdust and oil.

Either way, I'm packing it with grease and calling it a day.

      Thanks Dukester,

      Chuck

No, it's not sawdust. If anyone wants to take a deep dive into grease technology google on "National Grease Lubricating Institude".

                    Re: Thanks Jim

I tried a few times to locate this in the archives and gave up.

There HAS to be a way to clean up the search process. Theres so much good information tucked away there and it's a crap shoot if you find anything!

                    Sorry I'm ranting.............Thanks again Jim,
