I am trying to locate owners of other pilot line cars. I am interested in comparing notes on the car's equipment features and what inconsistences may exist between the later numbered cars. I am especially interested in F.I. cars with VINs below 100025.

Re: 1965 pilot line cars
I bought the HG long block out of '65 #22 at a Carlisle meet in the mid-nineties. It left GM in a '64 coupe with side pipes listed on its car shipper! This '64 had been initially delivered to Chevrolet Engineering and was later sold to a GM employee. I've never found any trace of the '65 body with VIN #22. The NICB said this Corvette was a convertible shipped to the Chevrolet Engineering Center in Warren, MI. That's all I know about it. It may not have left Warren alive.
The HG long block out of '65 VIN #12 showed up on eBay last year. It didn't meet the multi-thousand dollar reserve.
In 1978 Gene Dressen wrote that the complete HG engine from '65 #02 was located in Kansas with a tag on the plenum cover saying "Donated by General Motors".
I believe '65 VIN #01 was a silver coupe with a 365 hp engine. It was bought / sold a few times in the seventies before disappearing from the magazine ads.- Top

Re: 1965 pilot line cars
A 65 conv., #00003, was sent back to engineering and eventually resurfaced as the first big block car. I think it may have actually been a 427, not a 396.
It showed up at a few NCRS events in the late 70's or early 80's, unrestored. No idea where it is today.- Top

?
It's a shame I don't have that understanding.
I tried very hard to find this Corvette. I wrote an article about my search that was printed in the Fall, 1996 issue of The Corvette Restorer. Even after this article came out, no one ever came forward with any info about this particular convertible.- Top

Re: 1965 pilot line cars
Martin,
I'm not sure how to contact Jack Pringle but I'm sure someone here will have info. Also, there was some discussion of this car and it's current owner right here on this board a while back. You might try searching in the archives.
I have several pic's of the engine compt from the early 80's. Interesting that the surge tank is mounted next to the thermostat housing on the intake manifold.- Top

How bout if I just post the engine shot here on the board? I think at least one of these is already scanned.- Top

1965 #00003 BB Engine
Interesting location for the coolant tank. Obviously, a new air cleaner sticker but, other than that, pretty much the way it left engineering. This was some time around 1980?

1965 #00003 "Mark IV 427" Emblem
A 65 F.I. emblem slightly redesigned to make the Mark IV 427 emblem. The car appeared to have been a small block non FI originally. Possibly a 365 HP as I seem to remember that it had the high tach and 80# oil press ga.

Re: It showed up in Boston in 1985.
Was the car still unrestored? Would be an interesting project.- Top
