That's correct Dave. The area behind the manifold runners had little or no paint on the heads and sides of the block. For a good picture and description of this, see if you can find a book called "Corvette Restoration, State of the Art", by David Burroughs. If someone happens to have a copy, maybe they can scan and post the page that shows the side of the unrestored engine.

On small block engines, the same lack of color is sometimes seen behind the manifold runners on the sides of each cyl head.

Yup, that's the one. Thanks Greg. If we look at the pic for a minute, we can actually see the outline, or unpainted area, that the manifold would have occupied on the heads, block and oil pan. The direction of spray was straight on, a 90* angle to the side of the motor. They didn't slow down and try to paint behind the manifold, just went right over the top of it. Just one fast sweep across the side of the entire assembly that covered almst the entire outer and end sections of the manifold. So much for the "mist coat" theory.
