I have been having trouble with the generator not charging lately. Since the brushes were visibly worn I decided to pull it apart and install a rebuild kit. Turns out the brushes were asymmetrically worn but not down to the holders, so the commutator was not scored. FWIW, the armature has a big 1940161 stamped in it (cut n' paste the URL below), is that a Delco part #?

Anyway, the terminal to which the brushes attach was loose in its hole and had worn about half way thru (vibrations?) The rebuild kit included a new terminal post and a circular plastic sleeve to insulate it from the case. I could not see how to slip the sleeve into the hole on the inside of the case, there's a riveted strap (which holds the brush mount) that is in the way. As you can see from the pic, there's now a prominent white plastic ring sticking out around the post on the outside of the case. Though the generator is now working great, I'm sure I assembled it wrong- does anyone know how this insulating sleeve SHOULD be mounted? I can post a pic of the inside of the case illustrating this if anyone's interested. Thanks!
