      Re: wrecked performance cars

I remember back in '92, a guy came out to race with a '66 Corvette in GT1. It wasn't fast enough, so after a few, he bought an engine out of North Carolina. 350 that would sing to 9000 or so.

With that engine, I lapped him in 5 laps in the rain at Sebring running an old 327 my crew chief and I had put together under a street light on a parking lot.

After a year and a half, he had a newer faster car, a nearly new Camaro GT1, full tube chassis, the works. He was about 5 seconds a lap faster at Sebring than his old '66. He was still near the back of the pack.

But could he throw money at it.

I agree that the new Z06 would be more fun, but in reality where are you going to put the 505 HP "to the test". We don't have the luxury of the aotobahn here!!! I think the new Z06 is being grossly over priced and don't think the folks that are paying 20-25K over sticker(that's what my local Chevy dealer gets for theirs..sticker + $25,000 !!) will ever see the day that they get their investment back. On the other hand, I don't think anyone will lose money on a C-2 investment. That's a good as money in the bank. The speed limit is the same for both cars!!! JMHO

              Chris,

Define "grossly overpriced." Are you referring to the amount some dealers want over MSRP? Even at that price of $90,000 you just meet the price of a Viper, which is its closest competition.

Grossly overpriced? The MSRP is $65,800. In 1995, 10 years ago, the MSRP of the ZR-1 was $69,553. Now let's talk about "grosssly overpriced." At MSRP (and there are dealers selling at that price) the Z06 is untouchable. You can't even buy a Z-51 coupe and add modifications to get near to the Z06's performance for the difference in price.

The guys who paid over sticker for ZR-1s have never gotten their money back, either. Buying ANY new Corvette will not get you your money back for, oh, 30 years or so. And then, it's likely only due to inflation. They are purchased for different reasons, and some people own cars of both generations. I've got my 71 and 72, but have my order in for a 2008 Z06 because I can't think of a better one for my "once of a lifetime" new Corvette purchase.

it is not how fast you can go BUT how quick

you can get there is the fun. these new corvettes are so smooth that i have run 130+ mph and mrs clem,my speed govenor, never even woke up to give me hell. back in 1990 mrs clem wrote a deal on a new ZR-1 for $25K over sticker and i agree with you anyone who pays over sticker deserved to get shafted. i have been dealing with the same corvette dealer since my first new one in 1959,the same one mrs clem worked for and they treat me very fairly on them so i do not take a beating when i sell to move up. life is too short to worry about how much having fun will cost you in the bank account. i have pissed away a lot of $$$$ on cars in my life time and to this day i do not reget it one bit as it all was fun. i guess i should have bought microsoft but this new C-6 is sure fun to drive. my plan is to run out of money and breath the same day and leave the funeral bill to my son.

YUP! a big block is fast, but....

You can drive the ZO6 to work every day, even in the rain! And it still gets about 27 MPG on the highway with AC and a decent stereo!

                    Hmmm!

I wonder if my cars are dripping oil in the garage right now just thinking about it!
