I saw the increase in the dues, once in 10 years which is not bad. The question is why is Florida a dollar more? Can someone answer this for certain????

A not-for-profit corporation with a million
dollars in the treasury that cannot be bothered to publish amendments to the Bylaws for the membership (please see references to "members only at national conventions" but the applications still provide for "guests" if you pay an extra $30). The report on the last two Board meetings detailing amendments to the bylaws spelled out _______________________?
Seperate letters state that the "members only" problem has been corrected - how? It's time to step up and VOTE, people! And I don't mean for the incumbent, if he/she has not been keeping you informed.- Top

Can't Find Squat from FL!
If someone from National would be kind enough to either e-mail me [sebringbill@comcast.net]or fax me [1-941-378-1040] the documentation that prompted the Board's decision to single out those in Florida I'll look further into it. I've found nothing on the FL DOR website that I would interpret as it appears the Board has. I've dealt with various non-profit groups here for over 25 years and have never come across anything regarding a tax on membership dues for non-profit organizations. (I reserve the right to eat my words if I can find the right FL Statute!)- Top

Re: Dues Increase
I did not say the dues increase was bad as one response suggests. I stated the opposite.
I questioned why Florida was singled out for a different rate, even if it is one dollar. The arguement of postage does not hold up. Last time I checked Florida is part of the 50 United States and first class postage is 33 cents for a standard letter, not set per state. So the first class postage from OH to Florida is the same as to NY, CA, WA, HI, .... The post office is still part of the government. Now UPS and FedEx charge different rates based on distance so when I order materials that way I understand different shipping rates.
If postage goes up, all membership dues should go up. I agree that NCRS offers many benefits and is worth the membership fee. I'm still looking for the answer that clearly explains why Florida was singled out. I'm a member of many other non profit organizations and NONE of them have different rates per state. For Canada yes, that is another country, but not for Florida.
Thanks for all the interest.Joel Stieglitz

Lessee...Is This Helpful?
I believe this applies to our organization:
Here's Florida Administrative Code Rule 12A-1.005(4)(f):
"(f) Dues and fees paid by persons for membership in clubs
that do not entitle the members to use recreational or
physical fitness facilities are not subject to tax.
Examples of such clubs are sewing clubs, bowling clubs,
square dancing clubs, bridge clubs, and gun clubs where the
dues or fees entitle the payor to be a member of the club,
but do not entitle the payor to use recreational or
physical fitness facilities."
If the membership dues would be subject to tax in FL it would be at a rate of at least 6%; that's certainly more than the $1 "add on".
I'm still waiting for any Board member to send me the information requested in my previous post. (And I'll eat my words as appropriate in this forum.)- Top

Wonder about the Winter Regional
Since they will be selling memberships then, I assume they will charge everyone the $1 extra.
The actual selling will be in Florida and so the tax has to occur at the point of sale, regardless of the home address of the buyer.
Maybe that is one of the reasons they don't do the Bloomington show anymore, Illinois charges all vendors to pay tax on their sales at BG, regardless of where their home is.- Top
