I bet it would be a tough case for a prosecutor to make under that particular Federal statute against someone who purchased a pre-60 tag on Ebay and put it on his car. The purchaser did not remove, alter or tamper with the tag. I think you would have to look somewhere else, possibly the title act, for the violation. I also question whether they would even apply this to removing a pre-60 tag. Otherwise, if you unscrew your tag so that it does not get ripped off at a car show, you violated the statute.

That went quick- I was notified by one of the readers of my site, and before I could even get the details, the auction was pulled. It is now posted on the '59 Registry.

What about selling all those cars

without a title? I know some states don't require titles, but those that do also require it to go with the car.

An awful lot of cars on eBay sell with "no title" listed.

I'd think there would be a lot of investigation into these. After all, someone could just load up a truckload of Corvettes at the next show and sell them "no title" on eBay.
