The Snake Oil in my 67 blows so cold I've had to turn it dow a couple of times. At $4.00 per # long live Snake Oil.

Good link Chris. I also use the IATN board for info. Plus the MACS site. Plenty of info on the Snake Oil out there, they just lack the horse and wagon to sell it out of.

When I had my parts store,(this will make you cry) I bought 1000 case's of 12 each for .66 cents a can and sold it for .99 cents. Wow! Would I like to have that back. Dale

And Dale when I ran a fleet maintenance shop we would buy 100# cylinders for about $25-30. Forty years ago it would not be unusual to go through four or five charges in Heavy Duty truck air conditions. An we ran over 200 trucks with AC back then. But then gasoline was under 20 cents too. The good old days.

I had 134 in my 65 coupe and was not satisfied. I went back to R-12 and am happy. If you look around, R-12 is still available from people who stock piled it but no longer have a vehicle that uses it. I prefer the small cans - if they develop a leak you do not loose much. I would think the price would come down as there are fewer cars that use it. Don H.

The price has come down. If you search a little bit you can get some R-12 cheap, way under 15 frog skins

Dick, I bought this from Igloo freon, a subsidary of Contential piston rings in 1989. Dale

I think that what we were getting was DuPont and it was about 25 years before that. 1964-65 somewhere along there.

                      Re: R-134A+ (Plus) refrigerant

The real reason for the change from R12 to R134 was the patent for R12 expired. The patent holder prevailed upon congress (with copious amounts of money) to require a different (presumably better) refrigerant. They just happened to have R134 ready and waiting to fill the void.

                        Re: R-134A+ (Plus) refrigerant

The reason for changing from R-12 to R-134-a an effort to reduce production of greenhouse gases. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the late 1980's spelled out the needs for this. Following this even further it has lead to the Kyoto Protocol. Changing from R-134-a to another refrigerant is another step in reducing the gases. As I stated in an earlier post, the Europeans have already adopted another standard product, and US manufacturers are working on alternatives.

Check the dates for R12 patent expiration and R134 laws.

The "reasons given" were to reduce greenhouse gasses. The real reasons were greenback dollars.
