Re: Solid axle vs. Mid Year

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure some would argue that C2s look better than C1s (myself included). Appearance is purely subjective. As far as rarity, don't forget that C1s encompass 10 model years, whereas C2s were only made for 5. Demand is the other part of the equation so it's not just rarity. The performance improvements that were made with the C2s affect demand too. JMHO

"mid years and C3s with BBs having trouble fetching $70,000. Doesn't make sense to me and probably a lot of people on this board"

Re: Solid axle vs. Mid Year

        Bruce,
I couldn't disagree more. C1 cars are finally getting the respect they deserve. In my opinion there are far to many bogus and overpriced mid years out there and finally they may have peaked. Nice real mid years will always have value and eye appeal but what you saw may be a market correction. Now if we can get the C3 cars the respect they deserve. !!!!

A true auction story with no point.

Several years ago I got a call from a customer (now deceased) in Florida. He had gone to one of those carnival auctions like B-J with his drinking buddies. One of his buds, who we'll call Bill, had bought a '58 Corvette at the auction for $33,000 plus buyer's commission plus enclosed delivery. The group now wanted me to appraise the car so Bill would "know what he bought".

The group admitted they were intoxicated during the auction and that Bill had bought the car without any prior inspection. I suggested that they drive it to Mobile so I could inpect it without charge. They declined and offered to pay for my trip.

They told me the '58 did run when it crossed the auction block, but that it wouldn't start when delivered. It had to be pushed off the transport truck. Bill had since paid a local mechanic almost $2,000 to replace the "original" 2x4's with an Edelbrock AFB set-up, install an exhaust system with headers, fix the brakes, replace the stock distributor with a Zoom thing, etc. etc. Bottom line: they were still afraid to take it on the road.

When I got there I found that the frame was straight and never-rusted. The frame number also matched the title. However, very little else on the car was original or even stock. The VIN tag was a California DMV issued plate. The engine was a '64 passenger car 283 with an alternator. The "original" 2x4 set-up was from a '61 Corvette. The transmission was a Muncie with a Hurst shifter. The car had originally been white with a red interior, but was now blue with a blue interior. It was a hard-top only car. Of course the front fiberglass had been hit and poorly repaired.

Mechanically it was undriveable. It needed a new clutch and many other repairs before it could be taken for even a pleasure ride. They hired me to do about $2,500 in basic auto repairs, not restoration work, so Bill could have his first turn behind the wheel. Except he didn't fit. He was a "husky" boy and couldn't slide under the steering wheel.

Bill finally sold the car locally for about $25,000. At that point he had spent almost $40,000 on it, but had never driven it around the block.

                Dave, Roy, Jerry........

Roy....Its a LOT easier to Boogie a small block, from low performance to a high performance, but you're right. To easy, why bother.....
Jerry.....great story and so very true. At auctions, a "fool and his money are easily separated"
Dave...Do you not own an LT1? You would have a "vested" interest per say, if the C3's went up in price. Tell me now truthfully, car for car. Is an LT1 worth more than a solid axle car? I would like to think so, but a $100,000? Not in this REAL world.........Sorry Dave , they don't deserve that much respect.

                  Guys,
When does a 62 with a blower sticking out of the hood, and the only thing that the ommentators said was original was the body, deserve over $125K? For that kind of money, most of you C-1 guys should put a blow on and clean up. Way too much money spent for a whole lot of nothing.

Clem's "NM" is spot on and the same observation was made many times during the five days I attended. Keep in mind that it is the Barrett-Jackson Auction, not the NCRS Auction so you expect to see something there for everyone. Buyers are not the only ones that sometimes haven't a clue. We spoke with one short time C1 owner selling his car who we felt was genuinely unaware that a handful of very visible items were incorrect on his car. Any auto auction, including B-J, is the best example of buyer beware that one can imagine. You gotta attend BJ once in your life. I enjoyed it.

This car sold for $70K as an AC car all original, as you can see from the pics its not NCRS quality. Notice the valve covers powder coated, No ac vent above the clock, wrong seat belts. etc etc

Most of the corvettes I saw I thought were rough, The two in the pavillion tent that were both Top flight cars, were very nice and brought big bucks.
