    BARRETT - JACKSON AUCTION

Just wanted to pass on to you all out there that I was lucky enough to get away to the barrett auction in scottsdale this past weekend...and for you out there that own a midyear (I have a 65bb convert and 69 bb coupe / ncrs cars) we have money in the bank (or should I say garage). Prices on these cars are still going up and up.....life is good. That auction was the most excitment I have had in a long time. You should all make it there next time! What a rush!!!

    Re: BARRETT - JACKSON AUCTION

Hey Marc, I live in Scottsdale & go every year. I'm glad you experienced Barrett - Jackson.I have owned a 65,66,67, all monsters & now drive a 58. I watched from home as I was under the weather, but I would like all my NCRS comrades to feel free to contact me if you come next year. Maybe we can all meet & go together. I think it would be great fun to see all the faces that exchange the info & make friends on this board. When that Olds went for 3 mil I could feel the electricity in my living room. I also know where all the good reasturants are. Were you lucky enough to go to the Pavillions, it's a great car show every Saturday here in Scottsdale, every first Saturday of the month is Corvette day. There is a DJ playin oldies, great people, great cars, great fun. See you folks next year. Contact me, we could have a blast.
    Cheers,
    Deb

My thoughts exactly. The B-J auction is the best thing that's happened to the C1 and C2 market in years.

          I don't get the attraction.

I tried watching it for about a half hour. I guess you had to be there.

I can tell it's not for me. I can't imagine a more confusing, expensive, and risky way to acquire a toy. Were the buyers really car experts and astute investors, or just a bunch of old rich guys trying to impress their drinking buddies?

It was a vulgar display of American wealth in my opinion. But that's what makes this country great. You can piss away your money any way you choose.

Can't say enough about the "rush" of being there. I have been to lots of auctions, but the BJ auction is more than just another auction..it's an experience! If you are going next year..spend the extra bucks and get a bidders pass. It pays for itself with the freebies you get, plus you can sit down and watch the "free flowing" money being spent!!!!!!

Well said Jerry. The BJ auction has done nothing for the old car market but push the prices up on average vehicles. Now every kid who owns his dads 70 Cutlass thinks its worth $40,000. And solid axle Vettes fetching more money than mid year cars, $120,000 for a solid axle. Not in the real world......

Re: Solid axle vs. Mid Year

I don't want to start anything controvercial here but what is the matter with a solid axle car fetching more than a mid year. ??

Having been to Barrett-Jackson several times, in my opinion its a great event and has done a lot to promote the collector car hobby. The downside is that prices have escalated to the point that some people are getting priced out of the hobby. The upside is that people that are already in the hobby can watch their hobby investment grow.

Jerry, in defense of viewing the B-J auction at home, I consider the four days of the auction an "event" each year! I sit in my big leather recliner, snack on goodies that are absolutely no good for me and watch "the human drama unfold" as they say. Sure the wretched excess is there but it's entertaining, a true "reality program" unlike the phony, scripted ones on network TV. This Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday. My home team, the N.E. Patriots is playing and I can truly say I have much less enthusiasm for that spectacle as I do for the B-J auction. There will be the usual SB party, but it won't be the same.
Here's a great idea: Barrett-Jackson Parties! Invite your car buddies, load up on junk food and beer and enjoy!!

I agree. It's not the real world and sadly causes many people to think their cars are worth a lot more than they are. They are not money in the bank as someone implied but only worth what one particular individual is willing to pay.

What struck me is that there must be a LOT of money out there! Or a shift out of the stock market into "rolling stock".

Get this --Craig Jackson apparently isn't satisfied with his 8% plus 8% commisions. He raised the walk-in ticket prices from $25 to $40 this year.

Perhaps he just wants to keep out the riff-raff? What a rip!

He can forget about me ever watching his cheesy "Car Search" show again.

It's only $350. Without it you will pay as much as $50 per person per day to get in the gate and then you can't get a seat in the auction or even in the seating area without the pass, so you can only look over the other folks heads and hope you get to see something! Food and drinks are free with the pass too and also the opening gala and several other bennies! Well worth the price whether you are bidding or not.

Dave...if you were watching the bidding on the solid axle stuff. After the first one went for over $100,000, the next few just seemed to "fly" to that magic number in a hurry. As compared to some mid years and C3s with BBs having trouble fetching $70,000. Doesn't make sense to me and probably a lot of people on this board.... As others have said "just a bunch of old guys with too little knowledge and too much money" trying to impress their drinking buddies. When the TV coverage comes on at the event, you'll notice the prices rise considerably as opposed to no TV coverage.
Solid axles can not be compared to mid years or C3s on price except for something exceptionally rare, and I didn't see any solid axles in that category. I rest my case...........

Solid axles look better than other Vettes, and are rarer. Why shouldn't they fetch higher prices?
