Please do NOT make the assumption

that all of these buyers knew what they were doing.....or what the evil spirits were making them do......

Sometimes I wonder if we out-smart ourselves. We are so fanatical about the details that sometimes we forget that not everyone goes by NCRS standards. Some buyers care more about the "pretty and shiny" qualities of a car that appears, on a casual glance, to be original. I'll give you an example of how some buyers operate at these auctions.

The guy that sold the restored '58 went up to the buyer afterwards and talked with him, and it wasn't until after the sale that the buyer realized that the car was a 4 spd and not a PG! Can you imagine making that kind of mental error? The point is, that buyer was just looking for a "pretty and shiny" gift to give his wife! Not only did he not care that the car wasn't necessarily NCRS correct, he didn't even bother to verify that it was a 4 spd vs. an automatic! All he cared about was that it basically looked original and that it was pretty and shiny!

Tom, you are dead on with your comments. I have a friend that is restoring an original 270hp '57 for the sole purpose of selling it at the BJ auction. He wants to obtain a Top FLight and Bloomington Gold before he sells it but he also wants a car that will appeal to the Barrett/Jackson crowd. He just sent the door window stainless trim out for chroming because he says that the chrome would look better than the stainless polished. With decisions like this he needs to decide whether his main objective is to sell it for the max or get the pedigree. He has been going to BJ for years and knows what sells and why but it kills me to see him plate everything that will be point deducts later. Trying to appeal to two very distinct audiences is going to be a real undertaking. I think he knows what he is doing..................or does he?

                Tony,
You correctly make the point that "not everyone goes by NCRS standards." The Corvette hobby is huge, a lot of folks who like Corvettes don't know about the NCRS.

Those folks could care less about every part number being correct. They don't prowl through junk yards collecting period wheel weights. They like powder coat and hate over spray on manifolds, etc.

I think about this often, while restoring my '65 to the TIM & JG. When it's finished, many people will probably comment that it is a "poor" restoration.

In the final analysis; to each his own. But it's worth remembering that there a lot of fish in the ocean, and relatively few of them are wearing NCRS decals.

Thanks for the soap box time. Good Corvetting to all.

                Gene

You can't really blame a guy who wants to maximize his investment--if profit is what he's after.
