Also go to local swap meets and search. Cheap Q-Jets abound at these meets. At the last one I attended I found 3 great cores; a '67 396/325 4-speed, a '70 L46, and a '70 base automatic. All for less than $100. I bought the '67 from the original owner, he replaced it at 5000 miles with a Holley. The carb is like new. Pick them up, and look at the numbers, never can tell what you will find. Just need to keep looking until I find a 7042202.

One way to tell a fake is by the date.

When looking for carbs for my 71, I checked with another member who surveys 70-72 cars. I checked the "normal" dates my carb would have been made based on original cars in his survey, as they were batch built and only done 2-3x/month. So, the date for my car would have been one of two build dates.
Using that knowledge, I've also discovered that the "numbers matching" carb I purchased through a well known seller in Chicago is likely a restamp. The date does not match other 1971 Corvette 350/270 carbs. It still runs fine on my car, though.

Restampers likely do not have the data re: original manufacture dates for certain batches, so are more likely not to pick the actual correct date your carb was built.

Well, I paid for a rebuilt unit. I got a POS that I've subsequently had to pour a lot of time and money inot. I will never, ever give the Corvette parts dealer in Chicago another dime of my business. Feel free to search the Archives for details on my thoughts. I'd rather buy a new Edelbrock Q-jet replacement than give Chicago another sale.

FYI, I know of at least 3 other Corvette enthusiasts local to me who have had similar stories. I can just imagine how many there would be if we asked around further.

Check with Mark Smith in Texas, or better yet just check at Bloomington and Carlisle for a few years. Run a free ad in the Driveline. Do what it takes.
