I was told that guys are re-stamping the Q-Jet carburetors. but for for the life of me I cant see how you could do this an not be detactable. The ones that I have looked at all the numbers are stamped so deep that I cant see how much pad would be left. even if you took it the carb body to a machine shop an had them mill it down, it seems that you could spot it a mile a way! I know it would be even worse for one that has had a dremel tool on them.

Re: Q-Jet 68-72
If this restamping is being done then how is a guy like myself able to tell a fake from the real thing? I'm looking for one for my 69 L36,auto but all I've seen so far is 4spd ones. If the auto ones are this rare it would be nice to know that I'm getting the proper carb and not a restamped one from a truck or something.- Top

As with many other (but, not all) components, what you're really buying is a "NUMBER" and "DATES". Nothing more. Many other carburetors, some of them very easily and cheaply obtainable, could easily be re-configured to match the internal and external configuration of the carb you seek. In other words, you can obtain a carburetor that will perform and appear just like the original unit, save for the aforementioned.
If "numbers" and "dates" are important to one, then be prepared to pay the "big bucks" for those that are rare. As long as folks are willing to pay these high prices for "numbers" and "dates", they'll continue to sell for "big bucks". That's the way the "law of supply and demand" works. In this case, the demand is highly artificial. You see, nobody NEEDS a correctly numbered and dated carburetor. There are folks who WANT them, but there is nobody that NEEDS them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Q-Jet 68-72
Keep looking.
I look every year for one for my 71 350/270 4 speed car. I bought a beautiful, unrestored one about 4 years ago at Carlisle by asking the seller (who had a lot of carbs) what else he had in his van. And that one I found only after 5+years of searching Carlisle, Bloomongton, etc.
They're out there.
