    C2:67 Emblem Color Experiment

Last week I had a post on the correct red for the emblem on my 1967 gas tank door. I got lots of suggestions ranging from nail polish to testors paints to krylon and duplicolor.

So I hauled my gas tank door with the partially worn emblem around, first to a department store and beauty supply outfit (scored Jungle Red and Miami Mauve), and then to Andy's Hardware,a pharmacy, Kragens, and AutoZone for the various spray paints, Testors paints, and touchup paints. Boy, there are a lot of reds, I guess like wine, and I ran up quite a collection.

To summarize, attached is a photo of my experiment. The closest to my eye was Duplicolor Touchup NG CC 411 Colorado Red for Chrysler Vehicles (sorry guys). Krylon Cherry Red spray paint was a close second, NG GM 388 Bright Red touchup and Jungle Red nail polish were in there as was Testor's Dark Red. Cherry Red was almost an exact match when sprayed although when you thin it down to brush it on, it darkens and reverts to a more purple. I even had a graphic arts person compare the color to a Pantone chart. The Cherry is Pantone 187 C, although she tried to explain the difference in process colors.

I really preferred the touchup paints in a small bottle for ease of application.
And please take note John H., you can even use touchup paint for nail polish, as demonstrated in the photo. I found the color that's "right for me".

All in all, I think I came near to the correct color undetectible from original, except to a discerning lady judge. Which brings up another question!! Are there any?

I'll be working on the front nose emblem next week, which I think is a slightly different color then the gas door color. However, my nose emblem is so oxidized that I can't tell whether it's the same as the gas door emblem color or just faded more. If you have a '67 please check yours and let me know if yours has a difference in the red between the nose emblem and the gas door. The book says orange-red for the nose, but is silent about the gas door.

I had fun on this experiment, and I hope you get a kick out of this post.

Too much time on your hands, you need a hobby.....

Nice bit of research. The reds in the nose emblem and on the gas cap were supposed to be the same. Again, try to find undisturded originals for reference.
Your artist friend should alo have a PMS(Print Matching System)Book that shows a mix of solid colors which should a closer match than the four-color process builds.
Tints, dies, pigments and vehicles that are used for printing inks are different than those in paints anyway. She also should have suggested that you cut a hole in a piece of white paper to surround the red on your gas cap to obscure the surrounding Marina Blue when comparing the test red. The Blue will visually affect the shade and perhaps give the red a purple cast.
Regarding judging, as long as the red in question is darker than Rallye Red
there most likely will not be an issue.
And yes, we have many Very Knowledgeable and Experienced Judges who are also ladies.

Jerry, did you also repaint the blac and white colors, if so, what paint did you use for them? I have to do the same task.

      Thanks.

        Re: C2:67 Emblem Color Experiment

Scott, the gas door in the picture is my untouched original. I have been experimenting with a spare gas door which was totally faded out, and I did the blacks and whites. There's not much variation in black or white, I used Olympic
White in touchup up paint and it came out pretty good. You could also use plain White. For black, just use gloss Black without any fancy name. (Black is Black)

With the brush on touch up paints, paint on a horizontal surface so that it levels off when it dries. Touchup paints dry pretty fast.

Check the red to your original, before you remove the original paint, if there are any good remnants of the original paint. The Colorado red was "right for mine" although there may be variations.

I'm still not convinced that the nose emblem red on a '67 was the same as the red on the gas door. I was hoping to get some input from others on this.

          Thanks Jerry,
Someone before stripped all the pain of the original, I'll investigate your colors.

          Thanks.

Thank you for the post. I have to repaint the emblems on my 67 also and found this information very helpful.

              Jerry -

Although my physiology prevents me from observing the color match (or lack thereof) between the front and rear emblems on my '67 simultaneously , you appear to have found "what's right for me" anyway, although you could do with some "extend-a-nails" if you're really serious about the nail show circuit.

I'll take your word for it - my '67 gas filler (same Marina Blue as yours) has even less red left on it than yours does, but now I know how to take care of that. Nice work

Jerry, thanks for posting your findings....I'm sure more than a few 67 owners will benefit from your efforts...including me.
