Last week I had a post on the correct red for the emblem on my 1967 gas tank door. I got lots of suggestions ranging from nail polish to testors paints to krylon and duplicolor.
So I hauled my gas tank door with the partially worn emblem around, first to a department store and beauty supply outfit (scored Jungle Red and Miami Mauve), and then to Andy's Hardware,a pharmacy, Kragens, and AutoZone for the various spray paints, Testors paints, and touchup paints. Boy, there are a lot of reds, I guess like wine, and I ran up quite a collection.
To summarize, attached is a photo of my experiment. The closest to my eye was Duplicolor Touchup NG CC 411 Colorado Red for Chrysler Vehicles (sorry guys). Krylon Cherry Red spray paint was a close second, NG GM 388 Bright Red touchup and Jungle Red nail polish were in there as was Testor's Dark Red. Cherry Red was almost an exact match when sprayed although when you thin it down to brush it on, it darkens and reverts to a more purple. I even had a graphic arts person compare the color to a Pantone chart. The Cherry is Pantone 187 C, although she tried to explain the difference in process colors.
I really preferred the touchup paints in a small bottle for ease of application.
And please take note John H., you can even use touchup paint for nail polish, as demonstrated in the photo. I found the color that's "right for me".
All in all, I think I came near to the correct color undetectible from original, except to a discerning lady judge. Which brings up another question!! Are there any?
I'll be working on the front nose emblem next week, which I think is a slightly different color then the gas door color. However, my nose emblem is so oxidized that I can't tell whether it's the same as the gas door emblem color or just faded more. If you have a '67 please check yours and let me know if yours has a difference in the red between the nose emblem and the gas door. The book says orange-red for the nose, but is silent about the gas door.
I had fun on this experiment, and I hope you get a kick out of this post.
