    ALL KINDS of C-2 NUMBERS???

I think I have ascertianed that I have the appropriate trany for my SWC. With my VIN being; 30837S116445. My Trans numbers are 3116445 located (stamped) on the driver side rear flange with about 1/4" numbers.
The casting # on the trany side plate is 3831704.
The casting # on the tail housing is 3831731.

I can't make heads or tails of the differential. Passenger side # is 3899148-N and on the driver side what looks to be "J 76" ??? Nolan Adams book seems to be a little vague in this area. Well it doesn't show my numbers anyway.

Is there a website out there that can easily track down casting #'s for any chev. block. My 350 4-bolt cast # is 8970010. Then on the right side (smaller figures) is 8233.

    Thanks, Mike S.

    Michael,

Looks like the block should be # 3970010 and could have came in a 70-72 Corvette or most likely a truck. Got my 010 block from my 1974 Blazer.

    Regards,

    JR

      JR,
It is possible the number is a 3 rather than an 8, It is a little obscure.
      Thanks Mike S.

        Michael,

Corvettes from 1969-1980 used the 350 cu in block 3970010.

          Mike,

3831704: Muncie 4-sp. main case for 63 Passenger and Corvette.
3831731: Muncie 4-sp. tailhousing for 63 Passenger and Corvette.

Looks like the above two were for 63 only, as the #'s changed in 64.

          3899143: 67-69 Axle Center section.

My book doesn't show an "N" and the last digit is probably a "3" rather than an "8". "J 7 6" is October 7, 1966 which matchs for the 67 model year. Look for a stamped code on the bottom of the carrier. It will tell original axle ratio, date of assembly, and shift code.

3970010: "8223" probably is August 22, 1973. This block was used until 75.

I don't know of a good website, but Colvin's books are a good reference.

Mortec.com is a good site for chevy engines and heads. I wrote an article on the '63 Muncie for the restorer about 10 years or so ago, if you have the Cd, there is a wealth of information there.

                Bill,
Are you refering to the CD that NCRS offers? Do you know if the info on the CD also covers the same stuff as the "63-64 NCRS Tech & Judging Guide"?
I'm just trying to keep from purchasing redundancy.

                  Mike -

The CD is a compilation of all the articles that have appeared in the "Restorer" magazine from day one, and is an extremely useful reference - well worth its cost. It's not the same as the TMI&JG.
