      If Not In The AIM...

Then it's probably molded in like Wayne said. John Hinckley's comment on 67 panels having an identation at that location indicates to me it might have been molded in; i.e. the mold may have provided a molded "cut-out" in 66, and the mold was "repaired" or modified to fill the cut-out and leave an indentation in 67 panels. The indentation would permit the factory to revert back to the cut-out if found necessary. If molded in, the cut-outs would HAVE TO BE uniform in dimensions...I'm not sure that's been established yet.

But, I would have expected flash to have been cleaned up at the supplier's plant if it was molded...other edges were cleaned up, why not that "cut-out" opening? If it wasn't trimmed, then it would be rough with fibers and resin flash sticking out all around giving it a reely rough appearance...maybe it got "a lick and a promise" that left it with some roughness. Interesting discussion.

John - mine is smooth too, not rough as Gary describes, but it is the same size as Mike mentions...Craig

              Re: Crude indeed

Maybe if I look on the 66 it is rough cut, I don't know, but the 67 is very even and like you say, molded in appearance...Craig

Re: If Not In The AIM...

Actually, on my 67, there is a molded in area above each bumper brace, to allow clearance for the braces. In addition, the passerger side has the 3/4" X 3.25" cut out area, with rounded radius corners, probably about 3/4" radaii. This is also very smooth in appearance, as if molded not cut. So there is actually multiple molded areas. Craig

Craig, I misunderstood John's description of an "indentation" then; I thought he was saying there was a depressed area molded into the 67 valance panel exactly where the 3.25" X 3/4" "cut-out" existed in 66. My apologies for adding confusion to the discussion.

Chuck - well, I probably didn't explain it well in my post, but there IS a depresion molded directly where the braces go, on both the driver and passenger side. In addition, there is the "cut out" on the back edge of this depressed area, which also appears to be molded in on the 67. I have a 66 also, but it is over at a storage unit so I don't know how the two compare. Hope this post is clearer...Craig

Here's a photo of the "cutout" at the rear of the "indentation" on my '67, shot from the outboard side - looks the same from the other side; edges are smooth/molded, corners are nicely radiused as molded.
