    1963 Shifter

    Hi!
Could someone please explain the differences between an early and late 1963 shifter? What would be the transition date and if someone has pictures of each examples could you please email them to me?

    Thanks Ray

    Re: 1963 Shifter

I'm not sure of the differences in the shifters but sometime in the spring of 63 the transmissions changed from Borg Warner to Muncie. I believe the shifters changed at that time. I know the rear transmission yoke changed from coarse spline to fine spline at that time also.

I believe all three transmission levers and the reverse rod changed when the transmission went from a B-W to a Muncie. The other parts, including the shifter, stayed the same.

          Re: 1963 Muncie Cast 325 (late) ?

Could the ...325 cast main case, with a Patent number on it, be original in my June built 1963? I thought 64-65 only, but the P0526 seems perfect...

            Ray,

Jerry is correct! The 1963 shifter was the same for T-10 and Muncie Transmissions. You are confusing the 1962 shifter with the 1963 shifter. The shifter arms on the 62 was longer but in 1963 they had to be shortened because of the interference with the crossmember.

                Tom,
The first shipment of Muncies went to the Baltimore (passenger car) plant on April 9th '63. I've also documented May built '63 passenger cars from St. Louis with original Muncies, so I don't see why a Muncie would not be correct for your car.
                Hope this helps
                Verne.

                  Re: 1963 Muncie Cast 325 (late) ?

Thank you. However, I still question whether the 325 casting (with the patent number, not just "patent pending" on it) could have made it to St. Louis, and into a Corvette, by June of 1963.

Jer, I wonder if you won't find that the

'63 Muncie rods are different from the 64-7 because the '63 ends were smaller to get thru the holes in the T-10 levers - hence the rods were changed, but not the levers.

With respect to the 325 muncie case, it cannot be used with the '63 only 421 bellhousing, as the front bearing diameter is too large for the hole in the bellhousing. The '63 Muncie case was a 704 as I recall.
