Chris-If you can get the car up on jackstands using a good light you may also find burn or discoloring in the areas that the undercar pipes pasted close to the floorboards. It's detective work so look for all the clues!Regards,Lou Lapham

            Watch those guidelines in '65

You quote an obsolete JG on the issues of spash shields without staple holes and no weatherstrips. Restored my 396 using original splash shields with melted down weatherstrip. Took deducts based on JG guidelines.

Uncle owned the car and complained to dealer it 'stunk'. Got a "That's the way they are, it'll go away" reply....

Pulled the splash panels and pitched the weatherstrip. Then got 'hit' for evidence of staple holes. Sooo, pitched the original splash shields and put on fresh new ones. Everybody was HAPPY!!! Not me....

Started looking at AIMs. Found a note in the '66 saying to delete the foam weatherstip. Think you'll find the ECR date corresponds to the onset of summer in '65 and IS after the VIN number in question would have been built. Now, the latest issue of '65 JG clarifies saying 'early N14 cars would/should have weatherstrip on splash shields, later cars might have no weatherstrip AND show staple holes (delete pre-prep'd WIP splash shield parts?) and late cars should have neither weatherstrip or staple holes).

Tain't it amazing that we continue to learn about these cars!!!

                Yep, was 'tagged'

Car WAS tagged for N14 from the git go. Had to be because body called out a different rear valence panel AND there were glass cuts in the sill molding for pipe clearance. This MEANS, N14 was exploded upward to St. Louis and A.O. Smith body shops.

Given an environment where folks killed their grandmothers for a buck or two a unit, wouldn't you omit the parts and labor to weld hangers onto the sill frame then have somebody brutally wack 'em off downstream? What about the paint booth? Do we let the bear ends of cut hangers 'wick' rust into the bird cage because we breached the zinc chromate protective paint when we chopped the hangers? Ditto for the odds of messing up cosmetically visible paint on the body when a saw rips tip & tail off the lower sill areas....

                    Jack,

So being a slave to originality like the rest of us, you DID put the original shields and weatherstrips back on, didn't you? :)

Wasn't side pipes a St Louis body build only?

Re: Watch those guidelines in '65

Read my post again, Pat -- I said I PITCHED the originals because NCRS judges who I then considered to be infallible told me the parts were WRONG. That's one of the reasons I hammer on the theme of us all being MEMBERS of the same club instead of owner or judge -- brings out the aspect of human frailty that's always with us (errors of omission and errors of commission).

No, I was less experienced then and was simply trying to take a very 'rough' old driver and restore it as a living memorial to my uncle. I got told lot's of things that were incorrect and believed 'em. No different today. We're still learning about these cars and believe me every judge makes a wrong call here/there....

What I did learn was not to believe everything you hear and NEVER to throw away what you believe to be an original part. Who knows when there will be a breakthrough in knowledge/technology allowing you to re-use it.

Well, enough said, the original splash shields with their melted rubber goo are HISTORY. So is the factory original air in the tires with its 16 PPM of DDT that would categorically PROVE factory authenticity with a gas chromatigraph. So what? Car is a Flight/MOE restoration piece and NOT a Bowtie vehicle.

But, I'm sprucing 'er up for a Duntov display at Sun Valley and I decided to do 'something' here. Last week I pulled the virgin splash shields and blasted 'em. Visited several Rocky Mtn friends with MY cars in frame off and studied their shields. I 'duplicated' a set of 'original' staple holes and re-painted my virgin shields being sure to mimic runs in the paint.

Yeah, I was a 'coward' and stopped short of re-installing fresh weatherstip that would only re-melt/re-stink again. Who knows, maybe I'll drive this sucka.... So, com'on out to Sun Valley and let's party!
