      Re: winter warm up

I will never forget something that my brother(who builds sprint car motors in Oklahoma)told me years ago: the worst thing you can do to an engine is to start it and then shut it off before it has reached operating temp. If you are working on the car and need to shut it down then start it again, warm it to operating temp first, then start adjusting. I don't know the reason for this but I believe him! Any ideas?

        Re: winter warm up

When the engine is cold, piston ring blowby gas condenses and settles in the oil. Blowby gas is a combination of both unburned and partially burned fuel-air mixture created when the flame is quenched near the cold metal surfaces and exhaust gas, which is primarily water vapor and C02.

Blowby condensation can cause loss of viscosity in the oil due to dilution, lead to the formation of acids that can be corrossive, and other reactions that are not favorable to the oil or internal engine parts.

More blowby occurs on a cold engine, and as the engine heats up most blowby that condenses re-vaporizes and is purged by the crankcase ventilation system within about 10 minutes.

That's why and engine should not be started and then shut off after a few seconds or minutes. It should be completely warmed up and operated for least ten and preferably 20 minutes.
