        Re: 1970 LS-5 air cleaner/valve covers Scoop

        Thad,

Here's the scoop on LS-5 air cleaners and valve covers.

Air cleaner: There was a running change here during 1970. Early cars, before 1200 or so, had open element filter; late cars, after 1200, had closed element dual inlet air cleaner. My car was built in the last week in July 70 (~16000)and has the dual inlet air cleaner. Another car at the in=progress NCRS Boston Regional, also 70 LS-5, has an open element air filter. I think the VIN is around 11000 (June build date). At some point in time, both air cleaner types may have been installed at the production line, some with open and some with closed elements. Original air cleaner lids of the open element had silk screened service instructions while closed element lids did not.

Valve covers: Again there was a running change, only in 1971. So, all 70 LS-5 Corvettes had chrome valve covers. Early 71 LS-5 cars also had the chrome valve covers until this source was depleted and the transition was completed to painted covers. Furthermore, valve cover bolts were painted on the painted covers and natural on the cars with chrome covers. The size of the bolts are 1/4 - 20 of 1/2" length (commonly marked with D or RWB) except for the bolts which hold down the radio ground braiding of the spark plug wires. These bolts measure 5/8" in length and are commonly marked with TR.

        Hope this helps.

Buy it! Join NCRS, and have a blast driving it to meets and getting it judged and meeting a bunch of great people while you're at it. I just drove mine 536 miles to the Boston meet and I'm glad I did. My 70 Vette has 97,500 miles on the odometer and it is sitting next to a 20,000-mile 70 LT-1 with original everything including owner from Canada. Great cars, great fun, great people!
