    C2 universal joints

Any advice on installing universal joints in the half-shafts? Special tools?
I am installing the rear suspension on a bare frame. I have read the instructions in the shop manual, and I have a press, but the procedure is still not very clear.

Be VERY careful with the outboard U-joints (flange to drive spindle); that flange is easily distorted unless a spacer between its "ears" or bolt-on backing plate tool is used while pressing the joint; if you bend it, you'll need a new one. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward.

I don't recommend trying to install half shaft universal joints yourself. These are MUCH more difficult than drive shaft u-joints. I recommend traking them to a driveline shop for installation by a competent, experienced professional.

If you decide to go ahead and do it yourself, then you MUST use a fixture to support the u-joint flange while removing and installing the u-joints. An old spindle flange, bolted and torqued, to the u-joint flange will work. But, as I say, you're going to find this a difficult and frustrating task if you do it yourself and you may not be satisfied with the results. Driveline shops do this service for a nominal charge.

The "Spicer" brand u-joints (no grease fitting) will not fit in the flanges on the half-shafts. Precision brand will. Long Island insisted that the Spicer brand would fit but they didn't. My flanges are original, however, the Spicer joints would only fit replacement flanges. I had a shop in my area that does driveline and suspension install them, it was quick and inexpensive.

          I used Spicer's

Permi-Lube's (no grease fitting) on my original 66.

The shop that installed my Precision joints tried their Spicers and they wouldn't fit either. The body was too big, however, they fit in the other end.

              Gents,
I used Spicer-life (no grease fitting) U-joints P/N 5-799X in my original '65 without problems.
