    1962 stailess exhaust points loss

My 1962 will be judged at the Old Town Florida Rregional January 21 - 25 2004. I have installed a stainless steel exhaust system because after a year of judging, showing, etc. I want to, of course drive it.

My question is what hit will I take in judging regarding ponts deductions? any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a copy of the judging reference manual, there is a standard deduction for stainless. i don't have it at hand, but it is a substantial percentage of the originality score for exhaust.

Thanks Bill. I had discussed this earlier in the year with one of the Judges, and he saud they were trying to be more forgiving, but I guess I will soon find out.

I'm not aware of any movement towards being lienient on SS exhaust systems, this issue is about as old as NCRS. Only the Judging Chairman would be able to make that call, as he effectively "owns" the standard Deduct section of the Judging reference manual, I would suggest you either email or Call Roy Sinor for an in-depth discussion of the question. I know we used the std deduct last year at Fla and at the National in Hershey.

If you plan to keep, injoy and drive your Corvette take the hit! NCRS is a great place to learn about our Corvettes and meet great people. But many others use NCRS to gain prestige so as to get the Big-a bucks ( high points) then sell it.Many original great Corvettes never have thier Corvettes judged
because they drive them and park them in the parking lot. I don't care how any one puts it, if you REALLY drive your Corvette as NCRS (DO)say. Welllllllll.

Thanks Roy. yes, I am doing this to drive a car, not create a piece of furnature. One thing I do not understand is NCRS is so positive about driving the cars, but they are sticklers on obvious replacement parts like the exhaust and tires that can make driving them much better and longer, yet they penalize you if you do it for the driving. Anyone who has original tires probably cannot drive the car due to safety!

            Take care, Geoff

Re: 1962 stainless exhaust points loss

Sounds like you've fallen for some marketeer's pitch that stainless steel is 'better' because it lasts 'longer' and now want NCRS to bend the rules to suit the choice you have made. Why not also put a computer controlled TPI system on the engine and argue that it helps with driveabilty and reliability too?

There's nothing wrong with a plain old carbon steel system. The way most of these cars are driven today, they'll probably outlast anyone of us.

You begin to lump 'safety' in with 'better' and 'longer'. The exhaust system cannot be considered a safety system, irrespective of what material it is made of. Speaking strictly of safety, bias tires are as safe now as they ever were. If a persons' driving skills are insufficent to deal with the characteristics of these tires, most likely it's best to trailer the car, or switch to radials and take the deduct.

Why not get some black BBQ Grill paint and paint your exhaust. The jg says they should have blackout paint on them. They probably would not notice stainless if they were black.

If you drive your car to the event you might gain the points you are going to loose for having the stainless system.

                    Re: Are we all happy

I'm # 182 in NCRS and have had various Corvettes jugded at the start of NCRS and got many first flights. Driving them then was not considered a problem to make first flight.Yes we looked to see that all the parts were original as G.M sold them. Up dateing any part non-original was a no,no, which I agree even to day, and if you did you took the hit as it should be.
You play the game or get out.
So now today as I stated (really) driving your be-loved Corvette you can no way compete with a trailered Corvette.Do you think a judge laying under my Corvette and coming out with thier cloths and hands oily giving me any points? and the paint - a chip-Oh my. It's not the judges fault, it human nature when year after year they see trailer Corvettes that may not even have oil or water in them so as to not have any drips. I have seen this many times in the past.I don't know all the answers, but one would be to have two categories.
                    1. Trailered Corvettes
                    2. Driven Corvette
That may solve the many arguments between the groups and bring in many other Corvettes that may feel the pressure from trailered Corvettes, so as to be able to compete and to before given for driving a Corvette..

That's why there's driving points, Roy. Should compensate for the difference between driven and trailered.

Do you really think driving points would make up for paint chips, oily under side area, road dirt from years of driving and more?? May be if I drove from the UK.

You were speaking of a rode-hard-and-put-away-wet driver vs. a trailer queen. I was referring to the difference between trailering a car to a given meet vs. driving it there. The driving points should offset whatever small amount of additional deterioration occurs enroute to the meet.

                            These arguments are a trip...

The standard is showroom new as factory delivered & dealer prep'd. That doesn't mean a 200,000-mile car is bad. That doesn't mean a customized car is bad. That doesn't mean that YOU are bad!

It means that a car that is customized / NTFP / driven many hard miles is not judged to correlate with a standard of showroom new as factory delivered & dealer prep'd. Period. That's all. Get over it.

Hell, why not bring an Impala and complain because it loses too many points in NCRS judging? What, precisely, is the difference? It may be, after all, a REALLY NICE Impala...

                              Stainless point deduct is.........

My newly arrived Sixth Edition Judging Reference Manual lists the following standard deductions for Stainless replacment components.

                              50% All miscellaneous items
                              50% Fuel lines
                              50% Brake lines
                              50% Exhaust Pipes only
                              60% Mufflers only
                              75% Exhaust Pipes and Mufflers

We all have the option. I don't think we need to spend alot of effort debating the issue. This organization is the BEST because of the anal retentive tendancys of those who have volunteered their investment of time to make sure what was original stays original. We owe them our gratitude!

However, I'm using stainless on fuel & brake lines as well as on my exhaust system anyway.
