    1963 Distributor Cap

Got frustrated looking through the archives so thought I would ask - what is the Delco-Remy "short" tower distributor cap for 1963 "fuelies"? D308 or D310? My Corvette only parts catalogue doesn't list like this, but I seem to remember talk about both of these and want to be sure I buy the correct one if I find it!

    Rick-----

The w/FI distributor cap is Delco D-310, also known as GM #1943047.

No, the 1963 340 hp did not use this distributor cap. The 1963 340 hp used a standard D-308 cap.

            Joe,

Just trying to add to my knowledge base - so, the D308 was used on 340 hp and what other applications for 1963?

D310 was used on the 360 hp fuelie - was this the only applicaton for 1963?
Would assume so, since this is the "short tower" and is noticeably shorter by like 1/2 inch or so.

The difference in tower height between a D-310 and D-308 is 3/8".

The D-308 was used for all 1963 Corvette applications, including fuel injection. I don't think that the "short tower" D-310 came into usage until sometime in the 1964 model year. Also, a VERY, VERY small number of 1963's with FI MAY have been built with a dual point distributor. IF any were actually produced, they would have used the D-324 dual window cap.

                      Addendum

When I originally posted this information, I was speaking in more of a "generic" sense. The D-310, GM #1943047 was GENERALLY the distributor cap used for FI applications. However, since I posted this I did a little more research and, cross-checking from multiple GM sources, I cannot find any information which indicates that the D-310 was used for 1963 FI applications. It MAY have been so-utilized, but I can find no GM information which indicates that.

The first utilization of the D-310 which I can confirm, is the 1964 FI application.

                        Re: Addendum

Obviously, the D-310 cap is no longer available, and expensive if you find an original or an NOS one. ALL of the caps which I have found to be available from the parts stores, are of the generic, tall tower variety------------one cap fits all. But, NAPA (Echlin RR168) has a SHORT tower cap available for 64-5 FI engines, which is an EXCELLENT replacement cap for 64-5 FI engines and it has brass terminals (not alum). Only one drawback, it doesn't have the Delco name or numbers on it. Too bad, it's a nice, short cap, and under $10!
