Re: 72 stereo
This is abnormal. Additional insight(s) can be made when you give more facts about what you mean when you say radio reception 'goes to hell' when you start driving. AM band will behave differently from FM band and that can shed a lot of light. Also, if the effect happens exclusively in FM mode, is there a difference between FM mono vs. stereo reception performance? And, when reception is 'good' with the car stationary, is the stereo becon lamp on SOLID or is it flickering/blinking?
More: When you say 'stationary' is the engine running or off. Last, when you say 'in motion' is there any noticeable difference between acceleration, particular gear, cornering vs. straight line motion and so on?- Top

Re: 72 stereo
Often, if there is sharp static, it indicates that your antenna or lead are defective, and the motion of the car is causing the sharp static. (as opposed to ignition static, which is constant and low-grade irritating)- Top
