63- 36.5 gal. fuel tank

Mid year rubber fuel filler neck #3829421 is no longer available from GM. The original one was cut in two pieces some years back and needs to be replaced. It looks to be about 3"ID X 3 3/8 to 3 7/16" OD X 10 1/4" long. I found a 3" radiator hose at the local farm store which should fit but does not look like the original. Would the radiator hose work in the gas filler roll or better still, does anyone know where I can get the real thing?

brian: if you can't locate an orig, i'd fabricate a new one. Wouldn't use radiator hose --gas and it don't get along. If your orig is just cut in two, why not re-weld it, sand and buff the weld joint then have the neck cad plated. mike

Mike: This hose is a rubber material of some sort.It must be a neopreme or some other stuff that works with gas. Brian

I would trade one of those fat Z-06 tank filler hoses if I could trade for a 1969 3x2 AC idle solenoid bracket and strap or a 1967 427 Brown and a White accelerator return springs used with an Automatic. But I would only trade for a part like that. Does your cut one have the GM [] logo on it? The NOS one I have seen has only that identifier.

Yeah -- and to think that that piece was designed to handle 100 %FULL flow; the displaced air / vapor exited from another (smaller) tube. I've often wondered how many seconds it would take for fill time.

What about that blue pen? That's totally non-original for any 63-67. None were ever supplied with 36 gallon tank cars or, as far as I know, any other 63-67 models. I don't even think that pen model was even in production as early as 63-67. It looks like it might be a PaperMate "Flair" model. They've been around a long while, but not quite that far back.

By the way, I think that a piece of hose of that general configuration. construction, and material specs could be obtained from a supplier of fuel hoses used for aircraft fueling or commercial fuel truck hoses. The configuration might not be exact, but the size, dimensions, and chemical imperviousness characteristics should be "reproduceable".

As far as the "GM" markings, one could employ the "elfs from der forest" to "do the job". It would be a bogus piece, but it would be fully serviceable and no one is ever likely to notice it. In fact, material spec-wise, it could be far superior to the originals. Much better materials are available today than in 1963-67.
