    "66" 350 HSP Intake Bolts

Are washers required on the 12 intake manifold bolts on a 350 HSP car?

    Thanks,

      Jack:

I'm not sure whose requirement you are talking about but the original bolts had a "washer headed bolt" in there. Best described as a flange under the hex. I think it also was made of some alloy to avoid a "dissimilar metal" reaction but I'm not sure.

If you don't go with the original style bolts and use regular hex head steel, I would at least use stainless washers under the bolts.

Small blocks did not originally use a flanged (washer) head bolt. They should have, but they didn't. Big blocks DID use flange head bolts for the intake manifold.

Except for folks concerned with absolute, dead-on originality, I recommend the use of flange head bolts for small block intake manifolds (especially aluminum manifolds like the 66 L-79's). Alternatively, one can use small OD, "AN" style washers under the bolt heads of standard bolts and they'll be rather inconspicuous (but not from some eagle-eyed judges determined to find this "heresy").

"Form" is great, but "function" ALWAYS rises above it my hierarchy of things to do.

Amnesia is a terrible thing. I stand corrected on the bolts.
