There is a ball and socket in the long shaft on the steering gear, the steering box pitman arm connects to. On the end is a nut with a cotter to adjust the pressure on this joint. What is the propper adjustment on the ball joint in question, . The joint it self is covered by a dust boot and thin tin cover with two bolts.

Re: 69 manual steering
Joe,
I have an early C-3 chassis service manual that shows the correct way to adjust the stud in a center/drag link is to bottom the monster set screw then back it out 3/4 of a turn (+ or - what ever it takes to line up the cotter pin).
Unless I am reading the question wrong (which is entirely possible!!).

Howard-----
Yes, if Kelly's question was regarding the adjustment of the ball stud in it's seats, you are absolutely correct. I interpreted his question as referring to the "adjustment" of the nut which attaches the stud to the Pitman arm. Either way, it's answered now.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

As I re-read the question, I see that your interpretation is the correct one of the question being asked. In fact, the question is quite clear and I don't see how I mis-read it. But, I did.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: P.S.
thanks ,it was the ball stud adjustment on the center drag link, sorry for not knowing the terminology. bottom it out and back off 3/4 turn . try it out , does this create a stiff or high friction steering feel, or should it be very easy to rotate, no steering wheel in yet still body off . So i am moving by hand.- Top
