Thanks Terry If they were just coated then one must think about the assemby process. Tubes added last, but unpainted under the clips is a problem to this theory.

Agreed the evidence is inconclusive as to coating before or after installation, but I used the term coating because I am not convinced that what was used originally was paint. I would guess at powder coating, but the use of the plastic clips to hold the tube to the arm argues against that. The heat needed to set the powder would not help those clips much. It would be so nice to see the prints of the wiper arms. That would put an end to this speculation.
I believe most restorers use paint to achieve a reasonable facsimile of the original finish. It appears to me, although I rarely judge exterior, that they coat the arms and tubes with the same product. Be sure to make the spine of the wiper blade black also. Any bright material sticks out on the arms.
Some years ago DP-90 worked well for me on the wiper spine, but I recall hearing that product has changed in recent years. And now you know about everything I know about automotive paint. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of that product will enlighten us.

Lyle, I just looked at my Sept 8, '73 build date 1974 Corvette and at least on this car the tubes are definetly "natural". I can see in the opening of the clips the finish is the same-natural. Does'nt "appear" any type of coating has ever been on them, paint or otherwise.
