    C! TIE ROD ENDS

I am replacing the tie rod ends on my 61. The original ones have the grease fiting on the side. Most of the replacements seem to have the grease fitings on the bottom. Does anyone know where I can get tie rod ends with fitings on the side? Does it matter? Thanks, Joe #37862

All the original tie rods used the "side exit" grease fitting. Chevrolet serviced them early on that way, and nos or NORS examples are there if you search. It is an item covered in the Judging guide for the C-1 cars.

        Joe,
I had the same situation on my 61 with the outer tie rod ends. I found a pair of side grease fitting originals on ebay for a reasonable price. They were an NOS pair in beat up old GM boxes.

How do you get the things off the steering arm? I know about "pickle forks." But I don't think that's going to work on mine.

I'd like to find some kind of a puller. Any suggestions?

C-1 tie rod ends having the correct side grease fittings are available from most 53 - 62 suppliers. As for removal, the forks will work better than you think, If not, support the steering arm & 3rd arm with a 2x4 and one good blow will usally do the job.

              Chris -
My '58 had one tie rod end that wouldn't come off even with hurculean effort. No way to get more leverage under the car. I pulled the steering arm off and took it (with tie rod dangling) to a machine shop for removal by hydraulic press. It took surprising force, finally came off with a huge POP!

You can borrow a tie rod puller tool or the pickle fork design tool from Auto Zone.
