    C2 Ammeter

After having my cluster refurbished by a very reputable outfit, I went through the contortionist acts of reconnecting all the connections. No oil leaks, tach works, lights, wipers, everything but the ammeter.

I broke out my meter- 12.41 volts on both sides- .3ohms across the gauge (disconnected of course) Reconnected, yet it still did not work. After discussing w/ the gentleman that rebuilt it- he said it had tested out fine. I pulled the ammeter/fuel gauge section out of the car for a bench test. With a 12volt supply, test light and the ammeter- the gauge moves. Nothing else was done to the car electrically since the cluster was pulled a few weeks ago. I have tried it back in the car - still no movement!

Any ideas of what to look for? I'm stumped!!!

check the connection behind the fuseblock in the engine compartment. The ammeter in these cars essentially ascs as a sensitive voltmeter, and amperage is discerned by looking at voltage drop across the wire from the alternator to the starter. any hint of corrosion at that conection under the master cylinder will cause the ammeter to be inop.

when you say you pulled the fuel/amp part of the cluster, did you pull them without removing the entire instrument cluster from the car?? i did not think it was possible to remove the individual gauges unless the entire cluster were removed first. please advise.

PS, it can be done but it is a miserable job with the column in. (been there-done that)
