    Computer Question for this site.

I have an older Compaq Laptop with Windows 98 SE. It has Explorer #6 for the browser. I use this
computer for a "backup" and use it once in a while. It will bring up (slow) all my favorite sites except
this site for some reason. Window comes up and says it can not bring up this site. I'm sure it has some-
thing to do with the "cookies" or perhaps security settings. Any ideas?? Need help on how to reset
the "settings" so I can bring it up. Thanks in advance. Larry

    Hi Larry
Your question is best moved to the Discussion Help Board, and either John W or Gary C or Rob M will give you the best answer.
I know that the NCRS website functions best on browsers such as Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Those may not even be supported in your old 98SE operating system.
I will drop a note to the fellows above to get you the definitive answer to your question.
Thanks for using the Technical Discussion Board!

ps Larry, I just looked up Explorer 6 to learn about it and I see that it is a 10 year old system and
only 6% of the world still uses it, over half that number in China. Only 1.1% of all USA and Canada internet usage involves IE6.
This tells me that the browser is utterly obsolete, and incompatible with the NCRS website and your settings and cookies will not fix it.
I don't think your old Compaq will be any use to you for this site.

      Larry,

There are several issues with I.E. 6 that would prevent the TDB from displaying. The Technical Discussion Board is not a Static Site. It is built as you access it depending on information passed back and forth between your computer and our server. Are you logged in? You get one view if you aren't and another if you are. What are the new posts since you last visited? We ask your computer for the last time you were here and build that information custom for your view. This is all done with a combination of cookies which I.E 6 does support and Java which I.E. 6 barely supports. There are a lot more versions of Java than there are of I.E. and older versions don't support all of the functions.

Bottom line is Win 98 SE is just too old to support. We add features to accommodate newer technology and at some point the old stuff just won't keep up.

John: Yes I'm logged in with my other computer. Ok will not be able to use that computer on this site. Again it works on eveybody else's site except NCRS
which is strange to me. Thanks; Larry

          Larry,

All the other sites may not have the security enhancements that the NCRS site does which are not supported by IE6

I just checked the web sites that I have. One site had 2% using IE 6, none of the rest had not had a hit with that browser in the last 30 days. I believe most have ''stuck a fork in it'' and declared it done.

While we are on browsers an OS's, the TDB is a little flakey using Jelly Bean. Have trouble getting back to home and another little quirk or two.

I'm amazed to learn of a computer that still runs OK with Win 98.

Rob, that whoke up some brain cell from the past. I started my computer career in 1969 where we just got a new IBM 360 with 16K of memory where we ran an entire railroad. We did not know how we could every use that much memory, but then COBOL cam along and showed us. We set up an online system on that machine with teletypes in our remote offices. The Engineer ran a card deck through the machine for us to track our railraad cars across our tracks. Thanks for the pictures.

Michael: I still have a Radio Shack "Color Computer" that works fine. Just because things get old don't mean they don't work.
BTW: I have two "old" Corvettes that work fine also; maybe that 2% figure may apply here also. Larry

Thanks for the blasts from the past guys. My dig was with respect to the specific product (Win 98) which didn't need the passing of a few years to become old and outdated- it was awful right out of the box and just got worse.

I just picked up an old Dell that was being use for point of sale QuickBooks software. I am amazed also. You can buy it on my upcoming auction.
